New Supreme Court Nominee!

Modified: 07/09/2009

As many of you have probably already heard, Judge Sonia Sotomayor is President Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court. As a Hispanic woman who grew up in public housing in the South Bronx, Judge Sotomayor has an impressive personal background which makes her nomination a historical one.

Judge Sotomayor began her career as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan after graduating from Yale Law School. After five years as the ADA, she switched to private practice and quickly made partner. In 1992 she was appointed to the United States District Court by President H.W. Bush, and continued in this capacity until she was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals by President Clinton in 1998.

In addition to her extensive professional accomplishments, Judge Sotomayor has found time to give back to the community. She mentors students from troubled neighborhoods, and works for the Development School for Youth program that provides workshops for inner city high school students taught by investment bankers, corporate executives, and, of course, Judge Sotomayor.

At NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, we are excited to learn more about Judge Sotomayor’s positions regarding women’s rights and the Roe v. Wade decision during the Senate confirmation hearings.
